Job Role Description

Title: Automation Sales Consultant
Department: Process Systems and Solutions Sales
Reports To: Automation Sales Manager
Type: Full-time, Salaried

I. Summary

Lead and support the cultivation of business relationships in pursuit of selling Emerson Automation Solutions products, services and solutions in the field of industrial automation and process control. Product families include Emerson Process Systems and Solutions, covering product lines such as DeltaV, DeltaV SIS, PACsystems PLCs, Plantweb platforms and many others, including associated factory and John H. Carter Company services to engineer, fabricate, implement, install, and maintain these products.

The position requires traveling to customer industrial sites on a regular basis. Individuals must be capable of, and diligent about, compliance with safety rules and regulations in these environments. Attention to detail and awareness of potential safety hazards is expected at all times. Maturity and sound judgment are essential to working in this environment.

II. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • This job is demanding in terms of knowledge, skills, commitment, and all other job-related qualifications. Urgency and pressure for prompt, accurate results are routine. It requires the handling of multiple tasks with many unexpected interruptions. The job calls for the responsiveness and energy to work long hours and cover a wide scope without letting up on the pace. While training in certain, specific equipment is offered, the successful candidate must be diligent in learning on their own from time to time.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is essential for this position.
  • Cultivate and develop strong, mutually-beneficial business relationships with end-customer decision makers, influencers and stakeholders who influence and direct the purchase of products and solutions within the field of industrial automation.
  • Understand each customer’s Critical Success Factors (CSF), Key Performance Indicators (KPI), key initiatives and desired financial and operational business outcomes, and utilize that knowledge to promote and position Emerson and John H. Carter’s portfolio of products, solutions and commercial offerings.
  • Maintain a high degree of industry knowledge and awareness including: trends, technology advancement, significant accomplishments by others in the business, state of the competition, and significant events related to the company’s business and the customer businesses.
  • Provide leadership and ownership of assigned John H. Carter accounts across a defined territory.
  • For existing installed base sites, provide sales leadership to expand the business including preparing, maintaining and following account lifecycle plans.
  • Promote, sell and renew annual lifecycle service agreements.
  • Present and demonstrate product capabilities and the implementation and workflow processes of project and service execution.
  • Understand and navigate the Emerson organization and its ability to impact sales and support efforts.
  • Understand the John H. Carter Company’s key strengths and weaknesses when compared to the competition.
  • Understand and support Emerson booking goals and growth across the division.
  • Participate in the preparation of proposals.
  • Provide direct responsibility for crafting and presenting the value proposition of a solution, and verify that the solution meets the customers’ vision and application.
  • Support recurring activities such as regular cadence calls, both internal, with Emerson, and with customers, as well as annual assigned account business plans.
  • Maintain records of active opportunities within Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform Salesforce throughout the entire opportunity lifecycle.
  • Ability to travel via vehicle or airplane to corporate and manufacturing sites and facilities as required.
  • Limited overnight travel as required.
  • Manage expenses within budgetary constraints.
  • Other duties as assigned.

V. Qualifications

Education

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferred curricula such as General Business, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

Experience

Required:

  • Proven external sales record with commercial and technical experience in similar industry.
  • Relevant formal engineering education with ability to understand and sell solutions profitably.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word and PowerPoint) and Microsoft Visio.
  • High level of attention to detail.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in Salesforce CRM
  • Customer service experience
  • Proven track record and successful history of achieving goals and sales targets.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively
  • Basic business acumen
  • Experience in general accounting processes
